Hot and Warm Reading

Hot Reading

Hot reading is used as a co-occurrence of cold reading. It is a means of getting information of the subject by background check or catching a conversation. A practitioner can set a schedule for their clients ahead of time so they can investigate the background of the subject using a confederates that act as somebody like survey agents or salesmen.

Practitioners of Hot Reading give the impression that they have gained knowledge about their subjects through psuedopsychological means. The subjects are completely unaware that they have been investigated and the practitioners already have knowledge even before the session began. This is one of the most effective techniques in character reading during stage performances.

Warm Reading

While Cold Reading is the use of general preconditions known or common to people, and Hot Reading is the use foreknowledge of information about a specific subject, Warm Reading is a wise form of character reading mostly in use of the Barnum Effect.

Warm Reading originally came from Peter Houston's book:

"More Scams from the Great Beyond!"

Warm reading also pertains to "utilizing known principles of psychology that apply nearly to everyone" while performing the character reading. It falls between cold and hot reading and is safe and effective method if properly used. A very good example of Character Reader is the famous Hypnotist and Magician, Derren Brown.

In relation to Covert Hypnosis, the sole purpose of character reading is to establish rapport to the subject that they may somehow think that you can connect to them in a paranormal way.

The Art of Character Reading

Cold Reading

Cold reading falls under Mentalism is mostly used in stage performances and conversational hypnosis. From the term cold (without preparation), Mentalists and Hypnotists often distract their subject by pretending to know something or an information about the him/her like giving a statement that is generally true for anyone. On the other hand, practitioners can also make high probability guesses for a good chance of establishing a mind set to their subject that they really know something about him/her. This will create a great impact on the subject if the guess is correct.

Cold reading is by far the most common approach by Hypnotists or Mentalists to extract information from the subject and  will be used against him/her later. This will then convince the subject that the performer knows something that he/she could not possibly have known.

What to take note when doing Cold Reading?

* Confidence. It is the main key for a successful reading.

* Subject's cooperation

* Put a twist on it (i.e., palm reading and more!). This will interest your subject and keep him/her distracted.

* Be a good listener. While you extract information out of your subject, listen carefully and use what your subject has to say later on.

* Be a good actor

* Impress and flatter your subject whenever you have the opportunity

* Be knowledgeable of what your subject wants to hear, and say it to her.

Mentalism and Covert Hypnosis

What is Mentalism?

Mentalism is a traditional performing arts of the ancient times. And like NLP, Mentalism is not a form of hypnosis, although hypnosis can be used as a stage tool. Mentalists are also known today as the psychic performers.

Mentalism is completely different from magic performances and entertainment. Its main focus is the mind, and plays upon misdirection, deception, and confusion.

Aspects of Mentalism

The mentalists, who are practitioners of mentalism use the following stage performances:

1. cold/warm/hot reading
2. mental acuity/sharp-mindedness
3. stage magic principles
4. psychokinesis
5. extra-sensory perception
6. precognition
7. mind control

Psychic performances also include telepathy, divination and mediumism.

The Role of Mentalism in Covert Hypnosis

In Covert Hypnosis, the principle of Mentalism known as 'Reading' will be put into focus. Reading is a skill to give someone the mindset that you have a paranormal access into their past, present and future life. This can be accomplished by the use of subtleties within language that can be translated in numerous ways. This will make the person think that you know something about him you could not possibly know.

Most mentalists use hypnosis in their in their mentalism performances. Effects of hypnosis in mentalism depends upon the performer may it be a mentalist or a hypnotist. Some use hypnosis as a cover for mentalism effects, others use it as part of the effect itself.

With NLP, Mentalism and Hypnosis itself  put together, you will understand how Covert Hypnosis really works.

Steven Peliari's "The Art of Covert Hypnosis" is a good course for beginners to take. It covers NLP, MENTALISM and HYPNOSIS and how these three work together.

NLP in Covert Hypnosis

An Introduction to Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP)

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) is an approach to psychological therapy based on "a model of interpersonal communication concerned with the relationship between successful behavioral patterns and subjective experiences underlying them" and "a system of alternative therapy based on this that aims to give knowledge to people in being aware of ones self and effective communication, and to modify their patterns in emotional and mental behavior".

It was founded by Richard Bandler and John Grinder(Linguist) in the 70's. Both Bandler and Grinder affirmed strongly that it is a good tool to help people live better, richer, and fuller lives.

The term Neuro-Linguistic Programming was created to emphasize:

Neuro — A connection between neurological processes

Linguistic — Language

Programming — Patterns of behavior learned through experience

NLP Works by Making Others Do Willingly What You Ask Them to Do

NLP greatly affects one's experience which most people is completely unaware of. It is very advantageous if you know how to make it work by being aware of it, and knowledgeable in using it. NLP experts know where and when to apply their skills and successfully convince people to act upon their commands and suggestions easily. This is the key to success of becoming an expert Neuro-Linguistic Programmer.

What is the connection of NLP to Covert Hypnosis?

NLP is one of the factors of Covert Hypnosis, which as described above is a process of communication. NLP contributes greatly to Covert Hypnosis or Conversational Hypnosis from the word "conversation" which is one way of a simple communication.

While NLP incorporates a huge amount of hypnosis in it (With the help of Milton Erickson), it is not another or a form of hypnosis. NLP tests the way a person thinks, and process information. It finds ways to intercept and modify this information to alter the persons experiences or or beliefs.

NLP is founded upon:

1. The Meta Model
2. The Milton Model

In Covert Hypnosis, NLP contributes the Milton Model since it focuses more on hypnosis.

A Self Help Home Study Course on Covert Hypnosis will definitely teach you more on how NLP works in Covert Hypnosis.

Covert Hypnosis: How Does It Work?

What is Covert Hypnosis?

Covert Hypnosis is a combination of 3 factors namely HYPNOSIS, NLP, and MENTALISM.

Hypnosis can be used in one of two ways.  It can be appblied by using autosuggestion also known as 'self hypnosis' or it can be appled in an interpersonal set up also known as the 'hetero hypnosis'.

What is Self Hypnosis?

Self Hypnosis is the repetition of messages to oneself while in a very deep and relaxed state. This will cause the messages to be absorbed by the subconscious mind affecting one's behavior and the patterns of their thoughts.

What is Hetero Hypnosis?

While Self Hypnosis only involves one person applying hypnosis to himself, Hetero Hypnosis involves more than one person. It usually takes place when another person guides you to a very relaxed state and hypnotizes you. This can be done by hypnotherapists, or by a street hypnotists performing hypnosis on the streets and stages during a hypnosis show.

How does Covert Hypnosis Work?

Covert Hypnosis which is also known as Conversational Hypnosis is the art of changing the pattern of how people think, feel, and behave in an unconscious way of approach.

The relaxed or trance states people experience with Covert Hypnosis. Though it may have a little similarity with other types of hypnosis, Covert Hypnosis is still far too different.

Suggestions are typically changed into metaphor, but not in an obvious way. Stories which interests a person or people can be a good tool for covert hypnosis, since stories can be absorbed subconsciously and can be much more remembered. Also it can be a way to make people more relaxed. And what you need to build while telling a person a story is rapport.

Every person, has his own personal purpose on learning Covert Hypnosis may it be good or bad. It is known that Covert Hypnosis can be used to take revenge, seduce others and get other people to do what you want them to do. But it is not advisable and you are not encouraged to use it to harm others. Always bear in mind that Covert Hypnosis is not only about mind controlling others but also about controlling yourself.

These are only the basics of Covert Hypnosis. You will learn more if you take a self-study hypnosis course and train yourself to be a Covert Hypnotist.
